Guess is a trendy brand name store created by the Marciano brothers, who left the South of France to pursue the American dream in the ’80s. The result has been a California esthetic meets European influence. These days with Guess you see a lot of animal print and short shorts or clingy dresses. Their line of purses continue to be super popular, being both on trend and different from everyone else.
What girl didn’t dream of being a Guess girl at some point or another? I know I did! Those girls had that Thelma and Louise, Bonnie and Clyde, Dorothy gone bad kind of vibe. I was totally into it, and so, I used to wear a lot of Guess. I still love their purses, not the super monogrammed ones – those drive me a bit crazy. I probably have four Guess purses that I have been using for years, so they wear well and, if you choose well, they don’t go out of style.
When it comes to Guess clothing, I find most of their clothes a bit too skimpy. I was raised on the idea that one is supposed to choose between showing off legs or cleavage, not both! Of course we all break the rules sometimes, but lately that’s all Guess does. Maybe it has something to do with whoever is doing Victoria’s merchandising… While the shoes and purses were once the main attraction, they are tucked away on a back or side wall, and none of the clothing really caught my eye at all. Yet, going onto the website, I’m ooh-ing and aah-ing over dresses I definitely did not see in shop… Which could also mean that Victoria locations tend to stick to the more clubby esthetic, while you can still find the Guess we all fell in love with online.
To me Guess is a very sexually provocative brand which definitely buys into the philosophy sex sells. The first thing I think of when I look at their ads is “That was Photoshopped” and I think that has turned me off the brand. Also I hate nothing more then Guess purses that look like this. I would prefer to not advertise your brand for you, but I’m sure the cast members of the Jersey Shore would love to. Wow – that was pretty mean. All of that being said, Guess still knows how to rock a great pair of jeans. Recently a friend bought dark purple and lavender tie-dye jeans from Guess and they were beautiful. When Guess isn’t in your face with its logo, it has some very desirable items.
